Media Briefing: Violence Against Women & Mechanisms

On August 11, and on the occasion of National Women’s Day, a workshop on “Violence against Women: Guidance and Counselling Mechanisms” was held at the headquarters of the Tunisian Red Crescent, Zaghouan.

The event was organized within the framework of the program, “Advocacy for Women’s Rights in Rural Areas in Tunisia: A Case Study of Women in the Rural Region of Zaghouan.”  The latter is being implemented by the Applied Social Sciences Forum, in collaboration with the Project on Middle East Democracy (POMED).

A representative of the Ministry for Women and Family Affairs (Regional Delegation for Women and Family Affairs in Zaghouan), a representative of the local authority in Zaghouan (Governorate), representative of the Applied Social Forum, and Local civil society actors in Zaghouan attended the event.

The workshop discussed the law designed to end “all violence against women,” and that was approved by the People’s Assembly on July 2 6, 2017.

It also addressed issues related to

  • the content of the law, and the necessary means for its implementation.
  • Mechanisms of cooperation between civil society and local authorities.
  • Identifying the needs of local civil society in supporting vulnerable rural women.

It has been agreed that the meeting will be the first of a series of future workshops.
